Step Back in Time with July’s Talks at the Tower
History enthusiasts are invited to discover two fascinating chapters of the past this July as Gloucester Civic Trust’s popular Talks at the Tower series continues at the iconic St Michael’s Tower in the heart of Gloucester.
The first talk is on Saturday 11 July with Stories from Llanthony Secunda, presented by local historian Ian Holt. Dating back to 1136, Llanthony Secunda Priory has witnessed some of the most dramatic moments in Gloucester’s history. From its medieval foundation and the devastation of the Great Plague to power struggles between its priors and the citizens of Gloucester, the talk will bring to life the remarkable story of one of the city’s most important religious houses.
Later in the month, on Thursday 23 July, historian John Jones explores one of Britain’s greatest prehistoric transformations in The Stone Age and the Arrival of Iron. What was life really like during the Stone Age, and how did this extraordinary era come to an end? Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence, the talk examines how our understanding of prehistoric Britain has evolved and what the arrival of iron meant for the people who lived through this period.
Both talks begin at 11.30am at St Michael’s Tower, Gloucester. Tickets are £5 and are available in advance or on the day, subject to availability.
The Talks at the Tower programme offers an accessible and engaging way to explore Gloucester’s rich heritage, with expert speakers bringing local and national history to life in one of the city’s most historic settings.
