Coronation of Henry III – 800th Anniversary Celebrations

The Boy King Parade and Re-enactment takes place at Gloucester Cathedral, celebrating 800 years since the nine-year old Prince was crowned in Gloucester. Follow the young prince and members of the nobility through the city streets to the Cathedral, where the moment of coronation and enthronement will be re-enacted in a full ceremony in the Nave. Afterwards there will be a medieval market, family craft activities and medieval-themed entertainment and in the evening a talk by Marc Morris discussing the reign of Henry III.

12.00  Coronation Re-Enactment Parade from Blackfriars Priory in Ladybellegate Street to the Cathedral.

1.15pm Coronation Ceremony at Gloucester Cathedral. The moment of enthronement will be re-enacted in full ceremony in the Nave led by Bishop Racheel Treweek.

2.00pm to 5.00pm Medieval entertainment and activities in Gloucester Cathedral and on Lower College Green with family craft activities and a medieval market and displays of stone-masonry.

7.30pm to 8.30pm Historian and broadcaster Marc Morris gives an illustrated talk exploring the ingriguing life of this little-known monarch, examining his character and his reign, in particular his clash with his celebrated brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, which climaxed in a bitter and divisive Civil War. This is  part of the Blackfriars Talks series.
