College grounds cleared by trust

A city grotspot has been cleaned up thanks to Gloucester Civic Trust.

The society collected 21 bin bags of rubbish from the grounds of the former Gloscat college in Brunswick Road in a litter pick last weekend.

They were supported in their efforts by volunteers and Sea Cadets.

The site had become overgrown after a car park organised by the trust stopped operating at the site in April.

The car park will open again this weekend after a new agreement was signed between the trust and the land’s owners, Linden Homes.

But Civic Trust member Marilyn Champion said Percy the partridge who had become the unofficial mascot of the site had gone missing.

Marilyn said: “The only worrying thing for us is the fact we haven’t seen Percy, the partridge who had been living at the site. He had got quite tame, we were feeding him every Saturday.”

Marilyn said the new agreement over the car park would help keep the area clean.

She said:  “We have signed a new licence to operate the car park on the site on Saturdays, and as part of that agreement, we will litter pick each week.

“We began that last weekend, and we managed to collect a total of 21 bags of litter – there was a lot here.

“Some of the stuff here included a mattress, which was so soaked in rainwater that we could not even lift it.

“Luckily, Coun Pam Tracey managed to arrange for it all to be collected for us. We were really delighted.”

Coun Tracey said she was only too happy to help out.

She said: “They had cleared all the rubbish up, but because it was private land, technically the council was not responsible for taking it away. However, I called the street care team, and they were only too willing to help.

“They were brilliant, they were really happy to help. I would like to thank them for their efforts.”

Marilyn added: “What was wonderful was the number of people who came up to us and said how pleased they were to see us on the site again.

“Those living nearby said they had really seen a deterioration in the state of the area while we weren’t around.”
