Exciting New Themed Walks and Talks for Gloucester
Gloucester Civic Trust is launching a series of new walks and talks to tantalise residents and visitors alike.
The new additions form part of the Civic Trust’s St Michael’s Tower of Learning Project.
The walks and talks are easy going and suitable for all ages.
In a fun and entertaining way you will discover lots more about the city you live in and if you are a visitor, we are sure you will want to find out even more about Gloucester’s fine past.
These are just some of the new walks soon to be available with many more planned for the future:
“Spa, Statues and Scenery”
Wednesday 12 August 7.30 pm meet at Robert Raikes Statue
A walk around Gloucester Park and Spa area.
Gloucester Park has so many hidden gems and stories. Enjoy a lovely, healthy, evening stroll through Gloucester Park with civic trust tour guide
Geoffrey Johnston.
“Roman Ways”
Saturday, 22 August. 11.00 a.m. Depart from St Michael’s Tower
A gentle stroll around Roman Gloucester with Roman Expert Elizabeth Miles (in her Toga)
Discover our Roman roots on this fascinating walk.
“Jemmy Wood” Gloucester’s answer to Scrooge.
Wednesday, 2 September 7.30 pm in St Michael’s Tower
Here Civic Trust Chairman, Robin Morris, enthralls us all with his speciality talk on Jemmy Wood.
Jemmy Wood was one of the wealthiest men in England- yet led such a miserly life that Dickens based his Scrooge character on him. This is a lovely whacky tale – not to be missed.
“Siege Trails”
Saturday, 5 September – Gloucester Day. We celebrate the end of the Siege of Gloucester 1643.
Colonel Curzon will be holding you ”prisoner” for about an hour as he takes you on his Siege Trail of Gloucester.
Hear some quirky tales about the squeaking pig and Humpty Dumpty; hear how our Gloucester folk were held under siege inside the city walls with little food, water and amunition and bravely fought off the King’s men.
“The Robert Raikes Trail” – Wednesday 14 September 7.30 pm. Depart from St Michael’s Tower. With Hugh Worsnip
Robert Raikes probably the most famous son of Gloucester. Founder of the Sunday School Movement and an active prison reformer.
Join Hugh on this unique walk through Gloucester. Hugh had the privilege of interviewing Lady Raikes many years ago when he was chief reporter with the Citizen. This trail offers a great insight into a past life when girls and boys worked long hours in the local pin factories and how Robert Raikes brought edcation to poor people.
For more information on any of the above please go to www.gloucestercivictrust.org and look at our events calendar where full details are published. There is a small fee charged for each walk and all proceeds go towards the upkeep of St Michael’s Tower.
If you feel there is a walk or subject you’d like us to consider in future programmes – let us know by logging on to our website and filling out the enquiry form.
